Tire size on stock 16" wheels

Tire size on stock 16" wheels

OK guys I've searched and cant find the answer I need. Here it is. 99 SLE all stock. Both the wife and I drive it. I want to lower it and put on the Molly Kit with some nice wheels and tires. Heres where it gets ugly, she's not ready for nice wheels or the Molly kit. I've been whatching her drive and if it were lowered she would have already ripped the skirts right off + I'm scared she'll scrape new rims on the curb. So this is what I propose, lower the car, keep stock 16" wheels and put some widers tires on the rims. What is the bigest tire for this rim that won't rub with about 1.5" drop? The stock tires are to narrow. If she can keep it together for a while I'll do the rest of the upgrades....

I think the biggest i would go to is a p225/50r16 if you go any wider than that on the wheel you will start to wear out the center of the tire. That tire is 8.85 inches wide and you are putting it on a 7.5inch wheel.

just a word of advise: my front lips have been painted twice (now that are off - need repainting again) and my 17's were curbed rashed BIGGIE. All thanks to my good wifee....i hated the condition of the car..but i still love her! If a person is not confident in driving....don't give em' this car. Or you process modding another car. I know that feeling bro' - if you want to see your marriage work..move on to another car..I've had too many fights for my mods' that went bad!

I think that the gen 1 stock wheel is only 6" wide. A 225 width wheel will work, but as someone already said, it will bulge a little bit. 225/55/16 will match the stock diameter almost exactly. Going to a slightly lower profile might eliminate some of the bulge, though.
