Shimmy/Vibration

Shimmy/Vibration

Postby solara99 » Sat Aug 28, 2004 10:44 am

Hi All,
I have a 1999 Solara SEV6 with approx. 45000 miles, great car but lately noticing a shimmy/vibration at speeds over 50 mph. The funny thing about it is that it is not present all the time. It comes and goes.
Any ideas or suggestion before I bring the car to the garage and they start replacing things at random hoping to solve the problem?

I had the brakes re-done about 8000 miles ago and the tires are good, no appearance of bumps or wearing on one side.

Please help

Thanks

The tires just need to be balanced.

Before I had my tires rebalanced, from 65-75MPH I felt a vibration.

Its especially evident in the steering wheel

Ditto on that last statement. If that doesn't work an alignment will fix.

the balance should take care of it. but dont rule out the possibility of a bent rim. if its very slight, you won't notice it until higher speeds. check your rims, inner sections as well. if the steering wheel vibrates too, then its from one of the front 2 wheels.

I've noticed the same thing. My car only has 25k on it. I notice when I wash it that there is dirt on the inside of the rims, which I can't reach. Could there be enough of a build up to throw the wheels out of balance?

it's possible, but highly unlikely.

just take the wheel off if dirt is stuck in there.

you might have a leaking cv joint. dirt does not normally build up on the inside of the wheel.

Heya krooked,

I am having a similar problem in this post:

http://www.zer0.info/solaraguy/viewtopic.php?t=11133

Is the problem I am describing in that post similiar to the problem you are experiencing?

Lemme know if balancing your tires fixes your issue.

Thanks!

Well I had my tires balanced and I haven't had the problem since but like I said the problem wasn't there all the time but so far so good. If it comes back I will go for a wheel alignment.

I will keep you posted.

Thanks again for the tips.

hmmm...well try this:

the next time you're driving, and you hear the noise; hold your e-brake handle. if it goes away, it might just be the handle. my exhaust is kinda loud so i just ignore the humming noise now cuz i know that's what it's coming from.
