2002 Airbag diagnosis
hi guys
I need help to diagnose SRS system.
My car was flooded about 2 months ago. I was quick to disconnect the battery and drain the water out, changed oil and coolant. The was a lot of debris in the engine compartment so I just used the garden hose and washed out everything, being careful not to get the electronic parts wet. Cleaned the air filter box. Checked the throttle and it was clean. I pulled out the computer and cleaned and dried it. Did the same for JBL amplifier. Checked everything else at best that I could and finally started the car. And started the car. It hesitated and took me about 20 minutes to start it with battery boost from my son's car. It was rough initially as was expected but finally started to get better. I let it run for about several hours with the heater at full blast to help dry inside the car the engine too. Over the past few weeks I was busy cleaning the car. The was dirt spots in the Headlights, so I took them out and cleaned and dried them. The car now seed to run fairly good with 2 exceptions: engine light and SRS lights stayed on even after disconnecting the battery.
I checked the code and it was p1133 (Air fuel metering sensor) but I was not positive if that was the real cause. These sensors are expensive (about $250) and if the diagnosis is wrong then you have wasted your money. I called around and found a used one for $45 with guaranty to work. I replaced the sensor the P1130 code went away but immediately came another one, P0420 (catalyst is not efficient). I used my laptop and a scanner to record the various engine performances. I notice the downstream O2 sensor voltage changed a lot from high to low. This told me that the O2 sensor was ok so the problem must be with the catalyst. To be positive about this I replaced the sensor with one from my brother’s ’02 Camry. Sure enough the P0420 code came back. So last week I took the car to dealer and they replaced the catalyst (under warranty). They wanted to replace the sensors too but I told them no. So now I have no MIL anymore. One problem solved.
I still have the SRS light. I pulled out the SRS system controller and cleaned it. I tried to reset the SRS light using instruction I have found on various forums. All failed. It seems that airbag sensor assembly center does not communicate with the rest of system. I found detailed instruction for SRS check for Corolla. However the connectors shown for corolla is different from solara and I cannot locate connectors such as instrument panel connector. And here I am. I need to know if any one has instructions to check solara SRS.
