P0440 CEL / liquid leaking

P0440 CEL / liquid leaking

Postby RichD978 » Wed May 18, 2005 5:34 pm

heres the story, i was driving home from work and the CEL came on... When i went out to the car about 4 hours later, i noticed a wet spot under the car... so i started the car up and moved it to a spot that was dry and noticed it was leaking again. Heres the pics of where it leaked from. (its under the area where the center console where the HVAC controls/cd player is)

^^ anybody know if the tube suppose to be like that? or if it broke from anything?

So i went to autozone to get a diagnostic, the code P0440 (i believe) came on. It said Emissions control something, so the guy made sure the gas cap was on (which it was) and resetted the code for me. I started the car and the check engine light was gone. I called someone i used to go to school with, hes a tech and he said the leak was probably from the Heat defroster (for the front windshield/windows) I thought this leak only applies to A/c?

Whats going on with my car? Is the leak normal? Can someone turn on their car turn on their front window defrosters and let me know if there are any leaks? What can/should I do? BTW the liquid is clear

Please help me out guys, i'm very nervous about this. Thanks in advance

Yeah if you use the A/C then there will be water from condensation from the blower usin' the A/C condensor.
Check the book for what the code is really. :-?

p0440 - loose gas cap, loose hoses in the engine bay or charcoal cannister malfunction. if it stays off, then it was probably the first 2 options... 3rd choice will bring the light back on pretty quick

I'm almost positive that charcoal emission canister engine code is a common problem. The good news is it won't effect driveability or performance, the bad news is you will need a new part to get the CEL to go off.

I know I have read a blurb on this forum about the canister and EGR solenoid being common problems with the 1mz. Maybe Jeff has the info.

P0440, 442, 446 in combo usually points to a loose gas cap, loose hose (no drivability... just minor emissions) or, the worst case, charcoal cannister/egr valve/other emissions.

P0440 translates into "Small Emissions Leak"

For the loose hoses, just inspect the engine bay and make sure all the hoses are secure. Just give each one a gentle tug. If it moves, then resecure it.
