i'd get estimates from a variety of shops first before deciding. Then with the prices, factor in the shops reliability and decide after that.

It should be 50 bucks a piece. I got mines painted at toyota collision repair center in NoHo and installed for 50 bucks. BTW the rear center piece doesn't have to be painted.

WELL I AM A DIY everything as long as i know it will come out right..i know i can install no prob..just not to sure about painting it myself..i know plenty of painters though..through riding and customizing my gsxr

was thinking about borrowing some equiptment and having a go at it but i will probably let someone else paint it

thing i dont know is what type paint to get..there are many combinations companies use to arrive at toyotas 3n5 code..the best..so i am told..is to go with the base/clearcoat rather than the single stage

single stage sure is cheap though at 100 total for 2 pints, activator and reducer

2 stage is more like 80 for 1 pint plus extras..

anyone know how many pints i will need after mixed w/ activator and reducer?

im thinking 2 pints is enough possible 1 plus extras=1.5 total?

dont know how much % activator and reducer will add to the single pint

Toyota Paint

Postby ProRally Codriver » Mon Jul 25, 2005 3:01 pm

There is no such thing as Toyota paint.
You can go to any paint supplier (Mattos, Finishmaster,...) with the code and have them mix it and you'll get the same paint as if you went to a Toyota dealership that has a collision center and asked for it.

You can alway try touch-up paint. They have them at these 2 sites:

Automotive Touchup

No touch up

Postby ProRally Codriver » Mon Jul 25, 2005 3:20 pm

Touch up for a 7 piece kit? Forget that.

Don't bother going around getting estimates from multiple shops. That'd be a waste of your and their time considering what you are having done. An estimate is only an approximation and they don't have to stick to it anyway. Just take to reputable shop and leave them there and be done with it. Spending hours to save $20 isn't worth your time. Many shops will even charge for an estimate.

Good quality paint for what you're doing at a reasonable price is PPG, Dupont or ICI. Not something sold on late night cable TV infomercials complete with miricle dent removal suction cup for just $19.95.

Duh! I didn't say this was TOP QUALITY PAINT and he ain't no professional painter either! Besides, I'm just throwing out suggestions for him. I also noticed most people here are cheap and are always looking for the ghetto way to do things. If it was me, I wouldn't of bother asking and would've just dropped it off to a shop. So just chill with that infomercial crap :drinking:

man you sell aston martin and porsche..you do know what forum your on right? just joking but seriously nothing wrong with shopping around a bit especially when i know next to nothing about cost figures next to a collision center emplyee..

and

nothing wrong with a do it yourselfer..it is the reason i can afford a tricked out bike..soon to be tricked out solara, family and live comfortably..with all the projects i have constantly going on i would be broke and bored if i paid others to do what i am perfectly capable of doing myself. getting that first look after picking it up from a shop is niiice..but having it after a few hours of getting your hands dirty is better for some reason..for me anyway...

anyway i think the collision guy is right..the paint on these sites cant be high end paints and they cost almost as much..going with the 2 stage..thanks for the feedback guys

I'll tell you what, I painted my grille (I know it's not as major as the bodykit) and it came out just as good if not better than any shop would do! Plus, I did it myself. I thought their paint would suck too, but I was impressed...so don't assume you know when you don't know!!!!!!!!!!

you are right a grille and body kit are completely different..have you painted a body kit w/ this stuff?..then take your own advise and dont assume........

..educated guesses on the other hand..that is just good sense..i am not discounting this stuff but for the price i would rather get known quality car paint w/ the correct additives for poly so it can flex w/out chipping.

not looking for an argument just advise. dont be offended about my conclusion to which paint i will use..

thanks for the responses btw......i do appreciate the effort one way or the other.

SolaraGuy. My wife's shop has built 4-5 supercharged Solaras from the block up, nitrous installs (JoeB), water injection (waste of effort) and Tabasco's turbo Solara. She has a paintbooth at her shop also and has painted Tabasco and Silverious Solaras.

JAYDEE23 wrote:nothing wrong with a do it yourselfer..

I too am a do it yourselfer (except for painting items I want to look nice and the welding that could save my life (rollcage and suspension) to someone who knows more than I. ) I have my own spraygun, a paintbooth and even powdercoating equipment I mess with plenty as a do-it-myselfer. But when it comes to exterior panels on a car I want to appear factory paint, I have someone else prep and spray. It beats screwing it all up with 'fisheyes', runs, dust in paint, overspray, colormatch by blending, orangepeeling,... and uses and waste less materials than I will. Then it generally comes out right the first time and I don't have to pay someone to strip and fix my first attempt.
Grills are the easyist to paint because there is no large surface area.
BTW, don't forget flex-additive for any panels in your kit subject to flexing (side skirts for rocker panels) or its going to crack and peel later. EDIT: You posted while I was writing, and revealed you already foresaw the need for the correct additives.
