Got a slight vibration

Got a slight vibration

Postby xavier » Tue Sep 27, 2005 8:34 am

Ive been just dealing with it until yesterday when I got fed up. The vibration is enough to rattle my passenger seat. The funny thing is its not a constant vibration. It comes in like waves. not there....very slightly there...slightly there....there...really there....Im going crazy there....really there....there....not so there....gone. The duration of the wave is about 2-3 second from not there to bad to gone. I replaced my front tires but havent done anything to the rear. I think thats the problem but wouldnt an unbalanced tire shudder or vibrate at a constant rate?

Any ideas?

funny vibration

Has your ride ever had any front end damage? Drive over any curbs or anything? I think this type of vibration might be more internal than the tires. If there is something rotating at a diferent speed than the tires (in the trans. perhaps) then as the vibrations of both tires and the whatever either augment or cancel each other, you'd get that funny cyclical vibe you talk about.
I had a wierd cyclical vibration like that in one of my older cars. If you have all of your tires balanced and it's still there, I'd suggest trying a high-speed balance with the tires mounted on the car. I never did get rid of it in the other car. Good luck.

How many miles on your car? Is it a V6 or I4, what year? Is it at a certain wheel speed? Engine speed?
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

Could be alot of things. Vibrations through the seat typically indicates rear wheel/tire problems.
Could be anything from misbalance to a need to tighten lugs.

Ok.. I have 45,xxx miles on a 2002 i4. I had the front tires replaced and havent had anything done to the rear for a while. I have owned the car since new with no accidents. The only thing even close to that was I slid into a curb and hit the drivers side of the rim. I was going like 5 mph or less and there was only curb rash on the rim....no tire damage or other that I could tell. Its not a major vibration but it happens very noticeably at aroun 70-90. Atlanta traffic maintains a pretty fast pace so I see 80's alot
