rusty brake rotors

rusty brake rotors

Postby bassthrive » Mon Dec 30, 2002 12:14 am

woohoo, im getting rims in a few days! unfortunately my brake rotors are ugly as sin, covered in rust on every surface (except the flat friction part). how can i clean the discs? i am planning on using a dremel tool to remove the rust, but what do i do after that to seal and protect them? leaving the metal raw will only make it rust all over again. perhaps paint them? would a silver rust-oleum spray paint work well?

thanks,
paul

Mine are somewhat rusty too. I was going to paint them in the spring or early summer. Was going to do black.

I don't recommend painting the rotors at all. Painting the exterior parts of the calipers is fine, but not the rotors since your braking is dependent on them. I understand the brake pads do not make complete contact with the rotors, but nonetheless, I wouldn't tamper with them this way. For a temporary fix, try using some brake parts cleaner to try to clean them off.

I recommend you paint your rotors and brake pads with the anti-friction coating they use on the new Mach 3 Ultra blades... Good luck :)

Painting the hub and the edges of the rotor is not a problem. Just don't paint the braking surface of the rotor. I used Hi-temp paint on mine and it seems to work pretty well. Though I can see where I missed. Good Luck.

yeah hub and edges, youd have to be a total moron to paint the braking surface. i saw that hi-temp paint in a nice silver color so ill probably give that a try.

well the rims are on, and i painted the hubs using silver metallic engine enamel. they look good, the rust was really bothering me. a tip for anyone wishing to do this, brush or wipe the disc off first then apply a high-temp paint with a brush, spray paint is a no-no.
