Starter problems

Postby MNSolara » Tue Nov 22, 2005 4:57 pm

I am having starter problems with my 99 SE. I have no problems with radio, amp, headlights etc but the starter just makes a single "tick" noise.

I would prefer to fix this myself and am wondering if anyone knows or has any tutorials on location of the starter and how to replace it.

Any help would be huge as it's the holiday weekend and if I can't fix it by tomorrow then I'm basically screwed...

Thanks!

starter

Starters are generally Remove and Replace items, without too much hassle.

the Haynes manual sez to ensure you have the stereo code (I think your stereo will not work if you disconnect the battery for long enough) or just be dangerous and don't remove the ground wire from your battery before you begin to remove the starter.
apparently the cruise control actuator needs to be removed to gain access to the starter, and the upper bracket loosened to get it out.

But like I said... starters are generally fairly easy to replace.

Have you checked your battery connections? A bad connection can cause this also. It's happened to me a few times and even though the negative cable is tight on the post, when I twist it a little my car would then start fine. It was tight enough to give me some power, but not enough to start the car.

I took my car into a mechanic last night and they tested both the charging system and the battery itself. Both checked out just fine. I both cleaned my posts and cable connections prior to bringing my car in as well.

It turns out that I in fact do need a new starter. Apparently some of the "teeth" have broken off, but not all, so that when I continuously was trying to start my car...the starter would finally get to a good tooth in the starter hence allowing me to start it randomly. Thankfully someone is able to fix it before the holiday weekend...all for a grand total of $400.00. A little more than I was hoping to pay but the new part is roughly $220.00 bucks and then labor...blah.

Anyways...that's my story.
