ok...i'm thinking bout this whole low gas mileage/super loud idling noise w/ my car. could it be the fuel injector?

would that cause the mileage to suck and for the car to sound like crap?

That's a possibility. A bottle of injector cleaner wont solve it usually. You have to get it serviced by a tech.

Loud idling sounds like you need a tune up or perhaps sticky valves.

Sounds like someone might have an engine gelling problem, maybe.

sludge

symptoms: blueish/black smoke coming out the tailpipe
slight stuttering while driving. however, i've never heard of sludging causing poor gas mileage or a noise.

missay, do you have a v6 or an i4?

the problem seems to be more prevalent in v6's

if it is a "gelling" condition the warranty is unlimited mileage.

if it sounds funny idling couldn't that have something to do with the timing belt?

Timing belt has nothing to do with it.

Valves

Postby ScottV » Tue Jan 21, 2003 8:55 am

You might have leaky valves. My Solara (V6) started to surge at idle and I took it in and found that the valves were leaking. The compression in the front three were 55psi, 120psi and 180psi. 180psi is what it is supposed to be. I am now getting the heads machined and a 3-angle valve job. For me, this was probably caused because I had ran my car to lean (7psi supercharger pulley without adjusting mixtures).
