the MAF is the mass air flow sensor, and it converts the amount of air drawn into the engine into a voltage signal..the ecm needs to know the intake air volume to calculate the engine load..which is needed to know how much fuel to inject and when to ignite the cylinder..

Your engine might skip or backfire from running rich or it may be running a little lean which is very dangerous... your car may seem to be more or less liek it's lagging if the fuel mixture gets too rich. Many different symptoms and I'm not TOO well versed with MAFs, but if it is malfunctioning enough to produce any of these symptoms it should have already set off a CEL, no CEL and I don't think you have much to worry about, that is if you were worrying.
