urgent...i got water in my engine

Postby Remmi909 » Tue Feb 28, 2006 3:21 am

i was driving and a puddle came out of nowhere and after i hit it my car reduced its rev but then kept going. i have a cold air by the way and my inner wheal well got ripped off a few days ago. well i was still able to drive but it seemed as if my engine was limiting its rev to around 2000. i was afraid to push it any harder so i just took it home and now i dont know what to do. the check engine light didnt turn on and it idles just fine. please help ...i dont want to replace my engine. I'm assuming the water has settled and is maybe sitting with my oil so do you think if i drain the oil i might be able to drain out the water as well. thanks in advance

could water leak down past the rings? well, would' nt hurt to change oil if it could but the real immediate damage would be caused by water above the rings. open the air filter and see if its wet. if it is, open as much as you can and let dry out. get new air filter. doubt if any water would still be remaining inside the top of engine but if it could, remove spark plugs to allow water to evaporate from cylinders. the water could have got into the ignition system and may have limited rpms as well. i think if alot of water did get into engine, you would have heard a loud "bang".

i think if your car idle fine, than it should be ok. the rev limited might becasue of the MAF sensor got wet. if it is hydrolocked, you engine should be complete gone already.

however, i never had an experience like that, maybe you should search.

i just found this in injen site for you

Will water enter my engine if I install a cold air intake?
No, although water can enter the engine if the filter becomes submerged in water. Rain splashes and small puddles generally do not cause hydrolock. If the filter becomes submerged in water it could cause hydrolock and cause damage to the engine. We do not recommend driving through deep puddles and or floods. Most filters lie 12-14 inches above the ground. You may add a device to prevent hydrolock but cutting the intake system for installation will void our manufacturers warranty.

A puddle shouldn't be too much of a problem your car should be okay. Since there's no unusually symptoms. The only way you can hydrolock your motor is you purposely drive into a flood or something like that or a puddle that has the height of your bumper then your done for. But if its small puddle or even heavy rain you still won't hydrolock. However to be on the safe side do a check on your intake and check your throttle body, you probably should change your oil too just in case.

Good Luck

I have a friend that bough t a car with a CAI installed on it (dummy) and his wife drove it through a deep puddle.
There was no "is it okay?" because it blew pistons out the cylinder walls.

if you're idling, go with the rest of the advice: new A/F (or dry the old one out) and get an oil change. then drive the car untill it's dry.

You might want to check your ignition components, but if there was water in there you'd probably misfire on cylinders occasionally. Your low revs is probably because yer air filter is soggy.

I never understood why manufacturers dont put a door that's spring loaded shut, that'd open when it started sucking water, on those long CAIs. You'd rather have unfiltered air in your engine than water.
