as far, as i can remember, "overdrive" is actually just pushing the gas pedal harder to go into the 4th gear.

when you push in the O/D button, "O/D OFF" appears on your instrument cluster, this puts you back in 3rd gear.

and you'd only use it when you needed more pulling power, like going up a hill for example.

It originated as a 4th gear added onto a three gear tranny that was used for maintaining the best fuel efficiency at cruising speeds. Third gear was considered "Drive", so they termed it "Over Drive"... When pulling a load or driving up hilly terrain you generally disabled it.

Currently (since auto tranny's are usually 4 gears +) it just referrs to the highest gear on an auto tranny... When you're cruising at around 60 disable it and you will feel the car downshift into third (Drive). When you re-enable it your car will shift back into 4th (Over Drive).

Go on the highway and hit about 80 MPH with the O/D off. Now, paying careful attention to your RPMs, turn it on. It's like a 5th gear on your autobox and will mostly save you gas and put less strain and wear on your engine.

so basically does o/d (ON) usually help or o/d (OFF) ?

On current cars it's pretty much just a lable for the highest gear. For the most part keep it on; it should only be turned off if you are pulling a load or riding up steep inclines (or if you are racing you may want to leave it off as well).
