$8500 What would you pro's do????

Postby mattacosta » Sat Feb 22, 2003 10:17 pm

First off, I would not worry about spending the 8,500 on your Solara. No offense but 8,500 is ALOT to spend on a car that may be out of style. Don't get me wrong I LOVE my Solara, but if it was me heres what I would do.

1) Sell my Solara, maybe get like 13,000+ for it.
2) Take that money, PLUS the 8,500
3) 21,500+, take that money, and buy a 1969 Camaro SS...

I don't know I guess I have a thing for older Camaro's nothing like getting one and putting a big block engine into it...

The one problem is trying to find a 69 SS for under 20,000 in GREAT condition. You could find one in ok condition for like 5,000+,but you have to put some work into it. Once you get that done, put a big block in it.

Bring to the track and enjoy.

If you don't want to do that maybe sell your solara, and get something that is fast, yet affordable. If you put all that money into your car in such a short time, you will be screwing yourself in the end. You may end up selling the car shortly after you do ALL this work.

Just my suggestion....

ya, i gotta agree wit u Gunman, my dads got a mint condition, fire engine red, '67 Camaro Convertible with only 50,000 miles on it. its got almost every option, hidden front headlamps, am/fm, leather, and even a factory rear spoiler ---- Sweet ride!! the only problem is that it is the RS. so its only got the 327 small block. it still hauls pretty good though. we got that puppy on blocks in the garage for the winter time, but i can't wait to break it out in the spring time though!! chicks love that car!

Auto's gear ratios are crappy.

Not much go for a Solara IMO... If you want a drag car, you have better choices in that price range. If you want a track car, you have better choices in that price range.

If you want to build up your auto as a race machine, follow this order:
If you have lots of bling, go for big brake kit, if not:
{New brakepads (Eg: Hawk HPS/HP+)
Goodridge stainless steel brakelines}
Some good tires: R-compound for race. Maximum performance tires for daily driving. (I like my T1-S, soooo grippy in rain and dry)
17/18 lightweight rims, preferrably forged to reduce unspung weight and chance of being bent.
Same time as Tires: suspensions. Eibach prokit and Tokico. Even thought I like my Bilstein since it's harder.
TRD rear sway bar at track settings
Whiteline front sway bar
Level10 torque converter
Transmission cooler
S-AFC II
New heads to lower CR
SC w/ New Pulley

Faster is better?

Postby JMSinMaryland » Fri Feb 28, 2003 10:09 pm

You guys can keep your American beaters. I like having a unique stylish ride that gets compliments from domestic and imports (nice and not), etc, etc. You should all have known when you bought the car what you were buying. To me, my car is along the lines of a Gran Turismo car, fast but comfortable for cruising. In my honest opinion the only true sports cars out there are the Ferrari's and Lamborghini's. When people who could give a crap about cars stop and drool, there's something to be said for that. Jon.
