i heard the manual is 5sfe?? what about teh auto? shoudl be the same right?

and does the vvti for 03 make the car slower or faster? Thanks for the clarifications, appreciate it.

the 03 doesn't use the 5sfe it uses the 2az-fe. and auto and manual should be the same.

Here is an incomplete spec on the new 4cyl engine taken from the Toronto Toyota Camry Club. I believe this engine was introduced in the 2002 I4.

- 2.4 Litre, 155 H.P, Sequential Multiport Electronic Fuel Injection, 16-Valve, DOHC, Variable Valve Timing, 4-Cylinder

It produces more horsepower the 2.2 Litre 5S-FE which only puts out 135 H.P. I think the 5S-FE was introduced in Celicas and Camrys in 1992.

The 2.4L is offered as a manual though. If I remember right it is the only way to get a new Solara without an Automatic and ABS. If anyone wants to correct me please feel free to :).
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

why would they want to add something that slows it down?

"This system selects the ideal intake and exhaust valve overlap under all engine operating conditions. VVT-i virtually eliminates the traditional compromises between low-end torque and high-rpm horsepower. It also helps enhance fuel economy and reduces emissions so effectively that it eliminates the need for the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) emissions device."

VVT-i improves the valve timing for better performance and better air/fuel mixture management when needed. You be the judge if it slows the car down. Common sense says otherwise.

Correction, I have a 2002 I4 automatic that runs on 2AZ-FE (2.4L). It's not just for manual.

Correction.

130hp then later 125hp for CA models. 135 was for the Gen6 Celica.
