howl from right front

howl from right front

Postby Jeffrey Olson » Sun Jul 16, 2006 9:23 pm

I just purchased a 99 SE with a 6 cylinder engine. I noticed that when I turn the steering wheel to the right only a couple degrees going above 50 mph, a really low howl that changes with mph vibrates from the right front side of the car. When I track straight or turn the same amount to the left - no sound.

Does anyone "resonate" with that description enough to suggest what it is and what needs to be fixed?

Another sound I get when I hit a bump is a "loose parts" sound. I test drove a Solara in Greeley, CO that had a broken strut and while it is nowhere as loud or prevalent, the clunkety-clunk sound sounds like a younger version. Comments?

Thanks...

Hmmm...maybe you have an owl or wolf up in there? joking...

Perhaps a belt...belts make noises like that. As for the loose part noises, wow, don't know. Could actually be looses parts.

Check the outer cv joint for wear.

I was hoping no one would suggest cv joints. Any tips on how to check for wear? I'm a shade tree mechanic, putting a subaru engine in a VW vanagon, but diagnosis is my weak spot...

CV joint or wheel bearing most likely for the howling sound. Most likely the strut mount for the loose parts sound.
