Well, where to start. I bought a 2000 Se v6 5 sp. back in late April. 50,ooo KM on the odo. All stock. I figured it for a nice reliable car. After all it is a toyota. well my nemisis with this car is the check engine light. I swear to God if i see that light come on one more time........... 6 TIMES in 3 months. Different codes everytime, all emmisions control CRAP!!!. Everything from a no start because of a hose off the intake ( so the Stealership says) to requireing a new battery, and some evap valve in the fuel system and on and on and on. All service done at the local Stealership. I mean, i love the standard transmission, the 200hp the 200 tq the moonroof yadi yadi but that #@!$** light comes on and bam right off the bat i am at least $100 poorer. any suggestions to help me avoid an annurism would be greatly appreciated. sorry for the rant.

Bring it to autozone or something next time. They'll scan your computer for free, then just fix it yourself. Youll save alot this way

Look at carpoint.com It states that a common problem with our cars is the EVAP system. Alot of the time the gas cap causes the code so just make sure its on tight enough. I believe its three clicks. Plus The gasket could be bad so replace that too. It costs like 15 bucks. If thats not it I is probably a valve on the charcoal canister. I have a brand new one for sale if you want it. The dealership sells them for like 300 bucks but I can give it to you for 190 plus shipping. Check the other stuff first though.

I don't know about Canada, but here in the US there are auto parts stores that'll let you rent a code reader, and every cent is refunded when you return it (AutoZone).

That or just by our own code reader for $50. OBDII is fairly common so can come in handy for a number of vehicles.
