Has anyone had any luck with other vehicles other than their Toyotas when using synthetic oil? My mom has a 99 Mazda Millenia with 157,000 miles on it, and it runs absolutely great. Been using Mobil 1 since 70,000 miles.

I've been using Mobil 1 exclusively (until recently the EP stuff) since my 1982 Chevy Cavalier (no comments please). I usually run the factory oil for about 1,000 miles, and then switch to the synthetic. I've had no engine issues, although I've only had one car over 100K.

Well, since real synthetics have been around for about 20 years before any of them started advertising 15K, that's not exactly true - but I know what you mean.

You could have run synthetics longer that 5K back in the 80's or 90's, but the car manufacturers refused to endorse it and wouldn't back off their recommended maintenance, and doing so would void your warranty. So none of the synthetic companies would advertise longer service intervals.

Nowadays car manufacturers endorse longer intervals, and more synthetics are being advertised to do so as well, and the formulas are being tweaked for longer intervals.

Good points.

I know that I can probably go to 10,000 miles, but my paranoia of dirty oil and sludge prevents me from going passed 6,000 miles. I would need to un-learn this and brainwash myself to changing my oil between 10,000-15,000 miles. Would just changing the oil filter at around 5,000 be enough to keep the oil semi-clean?

If you've got to replace the filter, why not the oil? I also hate the idea of my oil getting really dirty.

Good points back.

Sludge is absolutely not an issue with a pure synthetic. The stuff just doesn't break down. Dirt is still an issue, which is why it is also a good idea that you use a higher quality, extended performance oil filter if you run 10K or longer. But if you're replacing the filter half as often, you can afford to spend twice as much, right?

I've heard of some using an oversized higher capacity oil filter as well, presuming your engine bay allows it. I've never tried that.

I'm suprise that a lot of you guys pay twice even more your synthetic oil and change it as it would be normal oil....

like variant said the main purpose of synthetic oil is too last 15k without any problem because it keep its "chimical structure".

Put normal oil if you change every 5k

my 2 cents :)

Solution

Postby JMSinMaryland » Thu Aug 17, 2006 12:22 pm

As stated before, I change mine every 10k but ONLY use a Mobil 1 synthetic (vs. paper) filter with the Mobil 1 EP 10w-30. I go to Walmart where I buy a 5qt container for $22-25 and the filter for $10. So at the most I'm spending $35.

Even if I changed it every 5k it's only about $10 more a year vs. dino. I agree with Sebas, if you're changing every 5k stick with dino oil, the whole 3k is a myth (proven by Blackstone (sp?) Laboratory). It is perpetuated by dealership service centers and independent service centers as well to have you come back more often, allowing them another opportunity to charge you.

If you follow a 5k interval you pay them $60 for a year, let's call it 15,000 miles average. If you follow a 3k interval you pay them $100 for a year for the same mileage. That's an extra $40 for 1 person, times however many customers they have, nice way to bump profits, plus 2 more times to try to sell you additional work (necessary or unnecessary).

If the manufacturer's say 5,000 mile OCI on dino, especially Toyota (who wouldn't want to risk premature engine failure, recalls, huge payouts, etc) why not just take their word for it, vs. Joe Monkey and the local 'Lube You Good.' Jon

Every 3k for me with the OEM Oil Filter. On my WRX I change it every 2500 miles.
