clunking noise when releasing the throttle

I have a 2000 SE 5 speed with 80k. Every time I release the throttle, there is a single clunking noise that comes from underneath the front passenger side of the car. The dealer told me it was the front and rear motor mounts but my mechanic said there would be considerable engine vibration if the mounts were bad (there is no vibration). My mechanic told me that there was nothing loose that he could see underneath the car. Is this a problem with the axel? Has anyone experienced something similar? It has been doing this for 2 months right now and I'd really like to find a solution!

I dont know if these cars have them, but it could be transmission mounts. I'm not familiar with how transmissions are mounted on FWD cars.
