Auto-Dimming Mirror

Auto-Dimming Mirror

Postby boiphil » Sat Aug 19, 2006 9:00 pm

Hey, for those Solara owners lucky enough to have the auto-dimming mirror, I've purchased one on eBay to install in my SE V6, I've located power wires where the sunglass-holder (in my case HomeLink) is.

My problem is that the mirror I have doesn't have the wires labeled for positive and negative.

Black w/red stripe & Silver bands
AND
White w/black stripe & Silver Bands

I assume black is Neg, White is Pos. Anyone with this mirror and a voltmeter willing to verify this for me?

just a curious question,
i normally run the wire for auto dimming to ignition wire,
if you tab the power into home link, will the auto dimming mirror be on 24/7? or only on when you insert your key to ignition and it is at on or acc position?

For HomeLink, it works when the key is out of the ignition, so I can safely assume that it does stay on (but you can still switch it off).

As a rule of thumb, anything with a red hue (pure red, red stripe, etc) is usually erred in favor of being positive.

Yes, the power wires for home link are always on. So I'll pull a seperate ignition wire from the 2nd power outlet when I go to hard-wire my radar detector in a week.

Believe it or not, the Black w/red stripe wire is actually positive, white with black is negative.

I can't believe how well this mirror works, FINALLY trucks behind me don't completely blind me! Not bad for a cheap-eBay find! It should hold me until I can afford to tint this thing.

Mine is a SE-V6 and had HomeLink installed in it when I bought it (I assume dealer-installed).

Pop-off your sunglass holder, remove the 2 screws, and there's one more screw under the maplight cover, slide the whole assembly a half inch forward (towards the windshield) and pop it out, should be a small plug w/2 wires attached sitting there for homelink.

Yeah right. That's the assumption I made right before I fried the ECU in my turbo Teg. Yup, I had a red wire and a white/black wire to tap into, and I thought that DEFINITELY any 'tard knows red is ONLY positive...

Gosh. This is like those movies that always says to "cut the red wire", while in real life no criminal would necessarily keep the actuator wire red... I'd like to see bomb squad training make that the only way in the book, then laugh my äss off when I see them say, "OH SHîT! IT'S BLUE AND BLACK! I NEVER LEARNED THAT AT THE ACADEMY!"
