Sounds when braking??

what do you mean by turned? do you mean resurfaced??
the point at which a car needs brakes is very very variable. it depends on the traffic in your area, how you brake, and the roads you drive on. most people in my area seem to get ~40K out of their brakes before needing replacement. that's just an average, not a rule. have someone take a look at your brakes, if you need pads, most likely you'll need to resurface (cut) your rotors.

Thanks Yanks! I do try...

And yes, turning/resurfacing the rotors are the same thing. Just a different way of saying it. I know I need new pads so I'll probably just get some here in the next few months. Guess I'll just have to live with that sound. It's not too bad though...I can definitely live with it.

Well my brakes on my 99' SLE are quiet as a mouse. Does that mean my Solara is abnormal compared to the rest? Oh well abnormal and quiet sounds good to me.

I'm really surprised to hear that so many people have these brake sounds. I have been noticing a clunking sound both when I start up from a stop, as well as when hit the brakes at a slow speed. I don't notice it when I brake at high speeds. Since it sounded like it was coming from the area of the front right strut, I thought it might be a strut mount problem. Replacing the strut mount didn't help, and then I read that there was a TSB on brake noises. If my noise is due to a brake problem, I definitely don't want to just live with it. For such a well put together car, it seems ridiculous to have to put up with this sound.

For those of you who have this noisy braking problem, can you describe specifically what it sounds like and when it happens? I'm just curious if we all have the same problem and if the TSB applies to it.

Front the front or the back? if it's the front, and you hear a single "clank" or "thud" when you apply the brakes, that's normal. It does the same thing on my 95 Avalon with 104,000 miles. It's done that since it was newer. I used to think I had a problem, but all of the Camry based vehicles experience that sound. It happens on my 64,000 mile 99 SE V6 as well. It's just a characteristic we all have to live with. BTW, i'm still on original pads and discs for both front and rear brakes.

I had that clank too, i recently installed x-drilled and slotted rotors and new green stuff pads, and the clank went away. My theory is that the pads are kinda old/have little thickness left, therefore it kinda shifts around a bit when you change breaking direction, i.e. drive to reverse and vise versa. Cause my car only did that as teh pads were worn down. I don't know just a thought, change your pads :)

It's just the design of the calipers and how the brake pad sits in them. Toyota recycled the design from 94 and continued on up to the newer models.
