Toyota changed the engine in the Solara to the 3MZ-FE. I'm not sure the 1MZ-FE is completely discontinued. Maybe they changed because of a cost savings or something else.
I wouldn't say the 1MZ-FE was a poor design. Heck, it won the USCC two years ago with more than 500 horses.

it was getting old and wasn't putting out enough power to compete on the market- as simple as that.

the engine was pretty tired tested and true....but there's no point having an engine that will last forever when it doesn't sell

Its just a GM knock sensor with an adaptor that you can buy from home depot or so. And the adaptor you can solder it. Dont ask me which adaptor it is. I forgot. I can put together a small groupe buy if I get enough people but im telling you now. Its not cheap.

I wouldn't solder a knock sensor. Solder is not that strong and the vibration of the motor is a good way to make it fail.

I believe knock is probably very similar amongst engine types, so I have no problem believing that it works.

This comment was about the solder. I work in the defense industry and I've seen lots of solder failures when people rely on it to be structural.

That's all. No more. No less.

just trying to give you a hard time man, in the end, we are all here just to enjoy the car. Personally when I hooked up my sensor, I used those wiretaps in addition to the solder+heat shrink wrap since I'm so paranoid about my car. Wire taps are there just in case the solders come undone. Let us know what you end up doing and report back results.
