Smoke Coming from vents

Smoke Coming from vents

Postby rec » Thu Dec 21, 2006 4:26 pm

Sorry to bug everyone but lately when i turn on my heater, smoke starts to in through the vents and it also looks like smoke coming from where the engine is, kinda towards the dash. This only happens when i turn the heater on . Anyone know why this would be happening?

nope i havent spilled any oil at all. Its wierd too because if you stand right in front of the car facing the hood the smoke is coming from the back of the engine. Does my radiator have anything to do with it. ? And Also do solara radiators take water or all coolant ? or half and half ?

Doesnt sound like a radiator issue. But check the coolant levels to see if they are low. Solara use 50/50 mix too.

if there is steam coming out of your vents as well, you may want to take a look at your heater core

Does it smell like a campfire? Check for smouldering leaves and junk. Been there.

If it smells electrical then perhaps your fan motor is frying out. But not if it's only with heat and not with cold air.

We need more info...

Either way, spend $15 and get an extinguisher for the trunk.

well if you have a lot of water in there it could be evaporating water, so check your evaporator drain, and i don't know if yours is new enough to have a cabin air filter but if it does check to see how clean it is

Your information so far leads me to suspect the heater core also... have you checked to see if you are consuming some coolant? Get FULLY up to temp and then switch heat on HIGH temp at LOW fan level, and see if this causes "STEAM" (appearing to be "smoke"). Note whether or not your windshield FOGS from this.

well i put coolant in the tank because i had none in there :X then i checked the next morning and it was a lil low so doesnt that lead to the heater core ? maybe its leaking somewhere ? I havent seen any leaking. After putting coolant it hasnt been smoking. But the coolant in the tank keeps getting lower.

There might be a leak somewhere in the radiator that is in the upper area; might not leak in your driveway but might happen when you're on the streets.
