99 SE V6 - 2800RPM Buzz/Rattle?

Hey Everyone,

I've got a 1999 SE V6 (5spd) that all of a sudden has developed a metallic buzzing sound.

The buzz only occurs once warm, and will start approximately 2700rpm and will stop by 3000rpm. Doesn't matter what gear, 1st-5th, it buzzes in each.

I just changed my oil (it was due anyway) and I went ahead and poked around to see if anything was loose in the engine bay or if there were rocks caught in anything and I couldn't find anything.

I saw someone else posted on here about a similar buzz, but no resolution got posted. Anyone have any ideas? I read a few posts about cutting the shielding off the catalytic converter but wanted to see if anyone's had a similar experience before I go hacking things off my cat.

^ I'd start by checking your heat shields

I had this issue a few months ago on my 1999 SLE V6. It was the catalytic converter heat shield. Dealer just cut it off during my 75k checkup and told me not to park in tall grass (no charge). They don't sell the heat shields separately so to get a new one you need to replace the cat con.

The reason for the buzz/rattle is that the mounting points rust out and come loose - only resonates at certain frequencies which you've already observed.

I fixed some civic shields like that with some small pieces of 3/16 X 1 inch wide thin stock just welded them in as spacers and the shield held perfect.
