Hey people my engine malfunction light just turned on...i was wondering if anyone knows how to test to find out what the problem is without having to taike it to a dealer? if i can't solve it myself....do you need a dealer to diagnose the problem? is it a computer issue or what? any help would be great.....

The check engine light can be a lot of things, so it's hard to check yourself. Take it to a dealer or a shop to get the code of what is wrong.

goto the dealer or a local shop and get the OBD2 code read. Some places like autozone will even diagnose it for free

it's probably an O2 sensor. that costs about $100.00 plus labor. that is, IF that's the problem.

haha, or it could be the ever enigmatic toyota fuel cap loose!
i recommend taking it to autozone if there's one near you.

My first suggestion would be for you to finish your gas you have in your tank. Then fill it with some branded gas (Shell)...then disconnect the negative battery terminal for 5 minutes...if the problem persists...then do as the above guru's stated...why all this proces...cus' when i was driving from WI to TX, i guess somewhere we filled our old contour with some bad gas...the check engine light came on...however...when i readhed Houston...i tried exactly what i just said...and the check engine light went away..and WAS away. Oh yeah, and make sure that your gas cap is tightened!
