Dumb question... jack height?

Dumb question... jack height?

Postby Akui » Mon Nov 24, 2003 3:41 pm

So I was in the auto store looking to pick up a floor jack as I figure it would be easier than using the scissor ones all the time. I take a look at a few and they all have a different range of extension heights and minimum heights. If the differences were slight I would've just picked one, but there was a fair amount of difference.

So I'm asking, what is a good range for a floor jack for our platforms? And yes, I'm fully aware of how stupid this question is :)

On a side note, I'm planning to paint my calipers. Not so much for looks as for overall dust and rust protection. I've a black solara with the stock 16" rims, and I'm looking for suggestions on color. Thanks much!

Red calipers on a black car alway slook good in my opinion. Blue isn't bad either. Don't go with yellow or green or purple (yes, I have seen purple). White might not be too bad but it'll get dirty. Black is always fine if you just want protectiona nd don't want people to see them. As for the jack....no clue, sorry. I'd say measure from the floor to the bottom fo your car, see how high that is and get one that fits under therewith like an inch or 2 of clearence, then you should be fine as long as it lifts your car like 10" or more.

No idea on jack stands height ...in the past i've bough solid used rims from junk yards and had my car on those while i painted the brakes. was a cheaper alternative for me....

I had my solara painted red in 2002 and its still looking RED! btw: i've got 15's, so its not like its noticable...but people have approached me and wanted to know the process of doing it...If i were to do it again, i'd choose silver or black! (unless you have a red car..then go with red).

Hey, theres a tutorial in the DIY section that describes the process, may be helpful.

And my advice would be to buy some VERY STRONG break cleaner and clean the S!@T out of the calipers before painting them, then wipe it with laquer thinner so the paint will adhere better. You can always just spray them as is but i think if you take your time and do it slow u'll appriciate it more. !! :)

Thanks for the input everyone.

I'm fairly open to pricing on the jack. I'm just looking for something I can feel safe using on my car as well as the other Toyotas that I've got. $100 for that package sounds like a sweet deal. I guess I'll just have to take a few good measurements under my car to determine a good range to look for in a jack.

gnaw_divad your rotors look pretty darn cool. Do you also run on the stock rims? I'd love to see a pic if you have one of it all assembled.

no, actually in not running stock 16's. I actually have some 18" Racing Hart C5000's. But i think since you have the stock rotors the rotor size to rim should be pretty similar to my larger rotors and my 18's.

I will try to take some pics for ya.. and thanks for the comment, always good to know someone likes your work
