ECM and gas cap

Postby DavPak » Mon Jan 12, 2004 4:38 pm

please start out by telling us the year of your car, the mileage and the reason you brought your car in for service.

what did they tell you happened to the ECU that it would need to be replaced?

BTW, the warranty on the engine ECU is 8yrs/80K.

(i know this was my first post in a while, i'm tryin to get back into it! :D )

Uh yeah you will need to get the ECM replaced! That’s only like what tells your engine how to perform. But then again, I would take it somewhere else to make sure they are telling the truth. It’s like a doctor telling you have have a medical condition and you then get a second opinion with another doc.

As Davpak said give us the 411 and maybe we can assist better. I know I got to take mine in for the check engine light and hope it’s not something like that. Ouch. :o

Call Jet performance and see if they can do something about it. It will cost you less and they will reprogram it for top performance. (Thats if there is something actualy wrong were they are charging you up the wazoo!) :fadein:

its not true, that does not clear the code. most likely the light went off by itself after a self diagnosis.

remind me why they want to replace the ECU?

The only time my check engine (CE) light came on was when I didn't get the gas cap on tight enough. You have to turn it until it clicks. If there is not a good seal, the computer will sense it and turn on the light. Once the problem is corrected, the light will eventually go off after a certain number of cycles of the key. With this problem, there will be no driveability issues.
The best way to get to the bottom of it is to get a code scanner and find out what code set off the light. I bought an AutoXray brand scanner on eBay for this purpose, which works great. It doesn't get much use though, since this is a Toyota.
If it's the gas cap, either get it on tight or replace it if it's bad. Once you have done that, disconnect the battery for about 15 mintues (or the power wire to the computer) to reset the computer if you don't have access to a code scanner.

I don't see why it would need to be replaced... If the CEL is on, go to some shop to get the code pulled... Then you will know what's wrong right away.

I called that a BS. unless your car was soak in a water, than it might. i really dont think a TOYOTA would have this problem. How is your car running?
Have you try to reset the computer by remove the positive on the battery for 10 minutes? Also the safe way is to get the error code, if you dont want to spend 50 to a mechanic to scan it, than here is your secondary option

I just reset my ecu last night, clear out 3 error codes. I also noticed by just removing the ECU fuse doesnt work. you need to complete disconnect the cable from the battery and wait for 10 minutes.

Hey Ultra,

The site lists lots of models that the scanner would work on, but did not list Toyota. Will this one work?
