225s at high speeds

225s at high speeds

Postby s e y t o n » Tue Jun 29, 2004 3:24 pm

does anybody else have 18 inch rims with 225 tires riding on stock suspension? because at speeds of 60mph and up, my front end (and steering wheel) starts to whobble. i had my mechanic buddy check it out and he said the stock suspension cant handle rims/tires of that size and just buying a heavier duty strut tower brace or shocks/springs would do the trick. now, hes a certified toyota mechanic who has been working at toyota dealerships in so cal for over 8 years, so he knows his stuff.. but he doesnt know too much about aftermarket stuff, so does this sound about right? im planning to go with 215s next time around for these rims anyway, would that alone solve this problem? Thanks.

you must not have the hub centric adaptors in...
i had this problem before cuz i didn't know that you need a hub centric adaptors..

heres a link on ebay.. this should do the trick.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... gory=33749

this is what makes your aftermarket wheels sit centered.. if you dont have these installed then get them and you should be fine... it has nothing to do with struts and springs.. if you dont have these installed your rim isn't sitting centered so you get the wobble feeling....

i ran 18 wheels with 225 on stock suspension before...

Get that hub centric ring put in, and the suspension should be a given, for permanent use of the rims. Maybe you could go a few months without a suspension modification, but you really should upgrade struts and springs when putting on aftermarket wheels.

I think I had the same problem too. When I get the new ones on I'll get that done as well.

Hey...I had 18s with 225/40/18Z Rated tires and it drove nice and smooth at 80mph.

I thought this would be helpful.

Hub centric rings are manufactured so that when they are installed on a vehicle, the wheels are located directly off of the centre flange of the brake drum or rotor. This is done to insure that the outer beads of the wheel are concentric with the wheel bearings. The result is a much truer, better balanced tire/wheel assembly. This is very important with modern high tech suspension systems.

i too get vibrations at speeds in excess of 60mph...i just had 225/40/zr18 tires put on too but cannot find any hub centric rings that will match my rims...how important is this to be taken care of? or would an alignment possibly solve my problem?

this is important but not necessarily urgent. this problem just causes uneven tire wear. initially, i thought i needed an alignment, but that proved to be a waste of $50. so just get it checked out.

PMed you back.
