doesn't it depend on the engine. i'm pretty sure the v6 has discs all around and the i4 has discs in front and drums in the back for all trims

a simple glance is all you need.

if the rear look anything close to the front, then you have disc brakes.

if the front and rear look totally different, then your rear has drum brakes.

I'm still a newbie at mechanical things and I wanna learn. Did a search on what Drum breaks are, but couldn't find anything solid. Since i;m on a I4 2000 Solara with the front rotor/rear drum setup. Can you give me a good technical explaination on how drum breaks work?

And a related question. In the future. Can the break system be changed to all rotor type breaks?

Then the V6 has discs in the front and rear has disc and drum.
Don't go messing with the rear brakes thinking it's just discs.

i think you are correct
according to the manual book for solara, the v6 has front disc and rear disc, it also has drum in disc on rear for parking brake.

1. They don't :P. No really there are two shoes inside the drum that press outward against it creating some drag. The are very ineffective vs. disc.

2. Yes, but it requires a lot more than just the rotors. There is a DIY posted on doing the conversion.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

Not mine. Mines discs in front and drum in back, but I got ABS.
