My exwife used to work for toyota so we got one a few months before they were released to drive around as a perk. Had to turn the car in at the start of 99. So we bought a white SLE. Since then, I have not found another car that i even like near what i do the solara. The ride is amazing and even running a buck thirty its smooth as ever. Even with over 120,000 on my current solara I can still ditch alot of cars with it and it rides almost as good as when we got it. Still has all the orig stuff with the exception of the tires, air filter and battery. Time belt is orig, plugs and everything else is what came on it. Yet no issues what so ever. I drive this sucker around the mountains on a daily basis and still don't have to try at all to pass everyone. All i gotta say it toyota makes one hell of a car. It may cost more and come with less options than some other american and foreign cars but you know it will be worth it.
The other thing that people always comment on is that no matter how hard you push it, it still shifts really smooth and is very quiet. I love the way it looks and if you ask me i feel it has a personality to it. The 2nd gen I hate to say feels cheap to me. Just don't like them at all. Was all excited for the new look from the pictures. Then went and drove one and just hated it. Later on I was thinking about getting a second solara and looked at the new ones and it still does not feel right. Feels like a family car where the gen 1 does not if you ask me. The rear in the gen 1 is also so much more comfortable than the gen 2 when you have alot of people in the car.
