 OK, let me show my ingorance yet again. I've noted that my engine idle seems to have come down. My TACH reads about 850-900 and my S-AFC II reads 690 to 720. What should the idle be and does it have a mechanical adjustment? 8)

Remember, your tach is analog and your S-AFC is digital. The digital one is probably the correct one since it's a # , not just an arrow. =P

Auto Idles (working temperature) around 750-850.
Manual idles (working temperature) around 700-750

What rpm do you gets get up to when you first start the car, after the car's already cold? I get up to around 1700 to even 1800 rpms intially. BTW, I have a S/C V6 too.

idle for mines around 690 rpm warm and about 1100 rpm cold. Mines a 1997 engine NA, with a M/T ECU.

i usually idle at 600-700, according to the s-afc2, but lately the car has been going down to 500-550 sometimes, and flucuating quite a bit, which makes the car kind of stutter at stoplights..or idle really rough..any one have an idea?

Hmm

Postby Poman » Tue Aug 24, 2004 10:15 am

Hmm it's about time people start to notice the problem. I too have the same low idle characteristic. My SAFC read the same as the tech around 700 but dip below it to around 600-650 and the car sputters and struggles to go back to normal. My check engine light comes on every 10 miles or so for bank 1 too lean (p0171)...i have this problem for a year and a half, i keep reseting it with the OBDII scanner.....

I think it's either, 1. fuel filter, 2. MAF sensor 3. O2 sensor 4. fuel injector/rail or 5. PCV valve (which I replaced) 6. none of them...dunno.

Anyone got any idea?

what psi u guys running?

so far with the 5.5, my safc at idle read 680 - 715.

Maybe you can adjust the idle speed at some point and see if it still stays below 650. The car can die anytime below that. But make sure the sensor type of the safc is correct.

Idle speed

Postby jim@foreignaffairs » Tue Aug 24, 2004 10:20 am

Keep in mind that the idle speed is constantly adjusted and monitored by the ECU. If there comes a point when the ECU can not adjust the IAC valve enough to get an idle the ECU is happy with, a code will be set. If you don't have a check engine light on, you probably don't have a problem.

You should invest in Jim's Fuel line kit. That should solve your problems.

I have the 6lb pully Auto. It's been running fine for a long time. The Check engine light p0171 came on before the 6lb pulley upgrade....I probably get the fuel filter replaced first to see if I can get a better fuel flow....

Jim regarding the the idle RPM and the ECU adjusting the IAC valve, the RPM get to a point around 600-650 where the car will just shake a bit at rest and the car sounds like it's about to stall. I never let it run to a point where it might stall. I kept my foot on the gas a bit to bring up the RPM enough to get out of that shaky situation...maybe I need to adjust something else?
