Askin for a lil help

Postby hnda8r » Mon Aug 30, 2004 8:18 am

My buddy is looking for a lil help.
He has been battling with the CEL for as long as he ownd the car (2 years) If its not 1 prob its another. Thats one of the reasons why i got rid of my Solara. The problem is the check engine light - p0446. He took it to Autozone and they told him that it could be just a loose gas cap, because its not getting the right pressure needed. Well he purchased a new one and he reset the ECU and he got the same code + blown knock sensor bank 2 the very next day. :-? Hes really pissed, and he really doesnt want to go to the dealership cause they just charge too dam much. So if any of you have had this prob or have any suggestions please share the knowledge. BTW he has a 2000 solara se v6 Supercharged w/ 6 psi
Thanks fellas. 8)

perhaps that is the reason why he is having CEL codes.

what mods does he have to accomodate the 6psi? air/fuel controller?

He doesnt have a air / fuel controller. I believe the code is for the evap system, will running 6 psi effect the evap? :o

aight hes going to swap out the pulleys, and let me know what happens. Has anyone had prob with the evap system. I heard it was common on the solara, but real pricey to fix. :o

by doing search from the past, it seems it's the gas cap.

I had the evap code pulled too.... Inside the charcoal canister is a valve that in my case got stuck open. Problem is that the evap canister is a sealed unit and just that valve can't be repaired. The cheapest evap canister I've found was $200, and I think it was around $180 for labor.... not cheap :-? THe good news is that it only affects emissions so if your friend's not up for that to be checked soon, he can put it off until he's got more spare cash.

its risky to run 6 psi w\ nothing else done for fuel.. tell him that running high boost is great.. but u need the other mods.. not just the pulley

Thanks Grazi07,
Your info was great, I told him that he might have to save a couple hundred dollars in order to purchase that part. He told me that he is just going to buy the part and install it himself.

And as far as changing the pulleys, well he changed them out and he took it for a test drive and the same CEL came on with the same 2 codes. He is getting very frustrated with the Solara.

he probably blew his knock sensors... its no wonder why either... u can't just strap on a 6 psi pulley and expect the engine to handle it.. the fuel system wasn't ment to run more than 4psi safely

ya, the knock sensor is already blowm, that's why the CEL came back, the knock sensor needs to replace no matter what, but i recommend that stay with 4psi until everything is fix.

If he only got the code for the #2 knock sensor, he's probably running way too lean. I agree with the other responses here. Replace the #2 sensor, if not both; then get some fuel upgrades or go back to the stock pulley. If he lives in CA, the problem is magnified because of the 91 octane premium gas.
