Which engine year is better?

Hey all,

I'm looking to swap the V6 1mzfe into my 6th gen celica. I have been looking at the different years of the 1mzfe adn I cannot seem to decide on what year to use. So I figured that you all who drive hte fast motor can help me out.

Im looking for the enigne with the most stock HP/ ft lb that is the easiest to mod( S/C) and do internals. A guy was telling me the 97 1 mzfe, but I have looked at some profiles and noticed that 99 seems to be a popular year. I don' think there were any differences b/w those years.

Looking for information and opinions of the V6

Thanks
Jeremy

Best I think is the one out the late ES300. That put out 210 and had VVTi. I don't believe they evermade a S/C for that one though.

The solara/camry is pretty much the base 1MZ.

The Sienna one, I think had dual throttle bodies. And theres the new 3.3L 3MZ in the ES330 that puts out 230HP, but Its probably bigger and an even tougher fit into the celica.

I did see the es300 b/c it had more power, but no S/c for it, like you said, but would it be possible to put the s/c on it? Since they are the same basic engine code

NO!

The VVT-i in ES will not work with the supercharger. The active control of the valves will prevent any good gains. Pre VVT-i ES 1MZs will work w/ the s/c.

If you do not want to super charge the car, go with a 3MZ FE. It is NOT bigger than the 1MZ. It's simply a 1MZ bored out to a 3.3L displacement (as opposed to 3.0)

VVT-i works off oil pressure levels and will not give substantial gains when supercharged unless the ECU is prepped for it.

You may want to research a 3S-GTE instead of a 1MZ... it's easier to transplant (from MR2 to Celica) and will hold better gains =P plus the torque on those... wow...
1GR-FE ftw!

Im all for the 1mz but Jeff makes a good point. The 3sgte has been known to pump out over 500 horses stock internals. The 1mz is a costly project.

i agree 3SGTE would be a more practical project. 1mzfe has really limited aftermarket support. If you decide go for ES300 motor, you have to beware that they dont have manual transmission aviliable. i think there are no difference between any year of 1mzfe out of toyota, but i think 49 states motor has a bit more power then california edition? someone please confirm this idea

For Camry/Solara 1MZ, 200HP for the 49 states, 198HP to meet Cali emissions.

I agree that the 3sgte has more aftermarket support, but everyone with a celica is doing that now. I was to do something different. Trust me that I have looked into doing that swapfirst, but since I know the 1mzfe has been put into a 90 celica and a MR2, I know it can be put in mine. It will be about the same difficulty and expense as a 3s swap. The 3s is not more practical since it doesn't just drop in b/c of the current eninge in my celica. Either was I would have to redo the motor mounts.

When did the VVTI start with the 1mz? Then I will have to go with the non- VVTI if there is room for the S/c in the enigne bay, if not then the 3mzfe or the vvti 1mzfe. I have to take measurements of the engine bays from the 90 and my 94 to see how much a difference there is to know how much room i have to play with for the SC.

Does anyone have the dimensions on the S/C?

If you REALLY want to try something different...

2AZ-FE swap (From 02+ Solara/Camry 4-cyl and tC) and turbo that mofo! =D

VVT-i can be disabled by the ECU (using the Toyota "Brick" scan tool - I can have it done for you if you're in So. Cal... or just have the ECU in So Cal at any point in time)
1GR-FE ftw!

Im not a huge fan on the 2azfe. Its good, but with the S/c its only at 200hp. I know a turbo will be better, but if I was going to do that, then I'd do the 3sgte swap.

the 1mz-fe in a celica would throw off the balance in handling. thats why the tiburon V6 never did so hot in the sport compact comparos. but as far as straight line performance, i would love to have one with a 1mz.

How would it throw off the balance? From what I have read the 1mzfe weighs the same as the 3sgte. so, if you are talking from a weight standpoint, you are incorrect.

Your easiest thing would to to talk to adrian (SBcelica) on celicatech.com; he did a 1mzfe swap to his 5th gen celica. Last i read, he had figured out debudding the codes for the swap and was on his way to getting his swap certified. By all means, its no easy feast....there will be a lot of custom work entained in such. He did it cus' not a lot of celica dudes do this swap. Chat on the mr2 boards, and there you will see other few 1mzfe mr2's.
Its nice that you would want to use a 1mzfe on your 6th gen...no offence, but if i were you i'd buy a 5th gen front clip and swap out a 3s motor into your 5sfe, but thats just ME!

Edit: Also to answer your questions, 1997-2002 camry's imzfe engines are all the same, they are all non vvti (watch out for some american edition 2002 camrys that apparently did have vvti). For solara, any 1999-2002 solara would be compatible). If you do go ahead with this feat, do talk to eddie to see if you want to acquire a s/c as well, a while back he had some sienna s/c for sale at an unbelivable price...the camry/sienna differences in additional parts was close to $250...and GOOD LUCK!

VVT-i (1MZ) was seen in the 03+ Camry (at least the SE...) I'm not sure if any 1MZ (02 Camry) came with VVT-i...but I think 98+ 1MZ (or 99?) in the ES 300 had VVT-i.

Perhaps you should go to a Solara meet (assuming any local to you are supercharged) and check out the size of the block and SC.
