Would I have been screwed with this key situation?

Okay, I was in FL for vacation and had my "normal" chipped key with me (99 SLE V6). Well, my GF tells me she can't find the key to the whip as we're checking out! I always carry a METAL key that unlocks the locks but won't start the car. There was a Toyota dealer close so I told her to get the VIN and see if they could make a working key for the ignition. I know they can cut a key using the VIN/lock code.

As I recall, the service guy here told me you have to have a working MASTER key in order to program a new key. Then, I remember a sequence on here where you hit the gas a few times, open the door, etc. We found the key inside the car (thank GOD I had the metal key). If it would have been lost, could Toyota made a working key without a working master? Damn glad she found the "normal" key...

I dont think so the key has an individual transponder code that I dont think has to do with the VIN numder

YES U CAN! dont be fooled by wat toyota dealers say. the local one to me said they couldnt do it either.. so i went out to another one and they jus wiped out all the computer memory from the car. then they reprogrammed it to the new key we wanted made. dont be fooled by them saying they have to replace the whole computer on the car which can costs thosands. they CAN make another key if u do not have the master

^^ yes, but you would need to tow the car to the dealership for them to:
1. have you buy new chip keys (assuming $50+perkey)
2. Programming cost....
3. (ok ok..soft cost) towing charges!

The dealership was like 3 blocks away. I'm hoping they would send someone down with that handheld computer instead of a tow job! Sounds like we would have been okay. Also, I think really high spees locksmiths could program a chipped key. I know a good locksmith can cut the key by VIN or lock key code. Looks like I'da been cool, but I'll keep a working spare from now on.
