Rack and Pinion Loose

Rack and Pinion Loose

Postby krzyray » Tue Dec 10, 2002 2:16 pm

Ok I have a 2002 Toyota Solara SE. I just got my alignment done again because my steering wheel had to be turned to keep my car straight (I think I took a turn to fast and hit a bump or something).

Anyways, I went to Tire Pros to get my alignment fixed. They fixed my alignment, and said that my Rack and Pinion is loose :(

They said after my car makes a turn, the steering wheel doesn't go back its straight normal position. Well I agree with them because my steering is still messed up, so did I really need an alignment or was my rack and pinion causing all this trouble?

They said I should take my car to Toyota to get this fixed... is my car still covered under my warranty??? because I got Tokico Shocks and Eibach Springs installed.

By the way, I did get into an accident about a month ago, someone slammed into the front left of my Solara going over 60mph while I was making a U-turn. My car was working fine after it got fixed, but I am wondering if this has anything to do with it too :-?

thanx

Is my alignment ok?

MAN! Hit by a car doing 60! Could be something from the accident didn't get fixed? My 02 Solara had a defect in the steering column shaft between the steering wheel and the universal joint down by the pedals, it caused a loose feeling in the wheel. They first thought it was a bad rack/pinion. Not much help.

Wow.. at 60mph a lot of things could have been majorly tweaked. Depends on how it was hit I guess. I'd look at seeing if it's too late to take it up with insurance? If it wasn't repaired to how it was before, well... that's what insurance is supposed to cover.

WOW, 60mph accident . . . hope no one was hurt. Heck, NHTSA doesn't even test vehicles going this fast. Sorry to say, the odds are not in your favor in the hope that your car will perform exactly like it did the day before. Today rack-n-pinion, tomorrow BSR's, the next bad paint job etc. etc. :(

Your front SAI rating seemed to be out of spec. Unlike camber, caster and toe, I don't think you can adjust your SAI (steering axis inclination). That being said, you're only 0.6 degrees off, so that's probably not the problem. A buddy here at work says maybe frame damage around the strut towers... just a guess.

Maybe have them look at your struts or frame around that area, to see if there was any significant damage.

Well I just got back for the Toyota service department... I told them about the rack-and-pinion being loose. They said that they would have to charge me for $70 for alignment to see what the problelm is - even though I just got one done a couple days ago!!! They also said that my car is no longer covered under warranty cuz it's lowered

How hard is it to tighten the rack and pinion anyways?! omg this sucks...
