Has anyone had any experience in installing the auto-dimming toyota rear-view mirror? Supposedly it needs 12volt power. How does that connection work? Thanks!

This is my first car with the auto-dimming mirror. It's great. It senses the lights from behind and dims to a dark blue when needed. No flipping back and forth. I see that a mirror is also made with a compass. Is that a straight-forward rewire/install?

Our camry's got the autodimming with thermostat...the auto dimming worked nicely until we got our rear windows tinted (limo tint)...so now in reality...i don't see a difference...however...i would recommend the one with compass/thermostat..thats a nice feature to have.
(i wish my solara had the same!!)

I think it does make a difference. I reduces a lot of the brightness from headlights behind you. I was driving at night and kept switching on and off to see the difference. Also, I heard green is the easiest color on the eyes.

hoo024law,

you'll tap into power in the JB behind the knee bolster left of the steering column. :-? Route the wiring from the mirror being carefull to trap it under the headliner without damaging the sides of the liner (be careful here since the hliner is glued at the ends (about 25~50mills inboard). you'll need to pull the trim off the A-pillar and route the harness this way then connect to the upper right portion of the JB (should be a 6 way connector).

DNM's work great and are worth the investment if connected correctly and you or the tech do little damage to the trim and headliner. Adding a mirror with tinted windows is a waste of money since the mirror works by guaging the amount of light it recieves from the rear of the vehicle at night, which then the sensor turns the inner mirror.

my wife has this on her Bimmer 02MY 325CI (uuurraaahhhhh) and also on the side mirrors. it works fantastic. 8)

good luck. Also, you can check a service manual at your local garage to get the exact location in the JB.
Wishin for warmer weather!!!

I've got the auto-dimming mirror and whenever my stereo is playing at relatively loud levels it makes a rattling noise. I've looked into it and it's because the actual mirror is not secure in the mirror housing. I'm wondering what I can do to reduce the vibration of the mirror. If I could somehow place something behind the mirror I bet that would make it more secure. Any ideas?
