With 215 45 17, your speedo will be off, because your overall tire size will be smaller than the stock... 215 50 17 is closer to the stock tire size.

It's up to you... If it was me, I would get 18", then get 225 40 18.
-19" Konig Tantrum rims.. Sitting in the garage waiting for tires..
-TRD springs.. Sitting in the garage waiting for struts..
-Conrero aluminium foot pedals.. Sitting in the garage due to my laziness.

Actually the speedo shouldn't be off by much at all. The TRD rims and tires which are meant to fit perfectly are 225/45/17. I've had them next to my stock 16" and they were almost identical in size. Although i think the 99 SE v6 had 15" inch rims :( That would screw things up a bit

besides using a radar gun..is there even anyway to test to see how far off different size tires can set yur speedo off?? or is there some mathematical equation (where are the physics people here!! jay?? lol) that you can use to figure out the apx. distortion?

There really is no easy equation but it can be done. Simpliest way is next time you see one of those signs, "your speed is...." set cruise on at say 30mph and check it. Your speedo may only be off 2mph at 30mph...but at 80mph it could be off 5mph or more. From the factory car speedometers are tuned a little low. That means when your speedo says 40 you are really doing about 39. Car and driver did a study on that recently.

225/45R17 is the best size for a 17" rim. 215/50R17 is also a good choice. It all depends on the look you want and how wide your rim is. I've upgraded from a 17x7" rim with 225/45R17 to a 225/40R18 on a 18x7.5 wheel.

215/50's is the closest to stock diameter

as for an equaion, i dont see why there wouldnt be an easy one
for example using the stock size (205/60R16)
multiply the aspect ratio (2nd #) by tire width (1st #), divide by 100 (because aspect ratio is a percentage)
take that number, multiply it by 2 (top and bottom of tire), and then add the rim diameter (16"X25=400mm)
sooo the overall stock diameter (rim and tire) would be 646mm=25.84" (sounds kinda big, did i screw up somewhere?)

anyways, do that same thing with an aftermarket wheel/tire combo, and calculate one as a % of the other, thats how much it will be off

There actually is a way for a good indication of how much a tire would cause the speedo to be off. See this thread where I talk about using RPM specs from tirerack.com:

http://www.zer0.info/solaraguy/viewtopic.php?t=1916

Stock tires are 813 RPM. Look at the specific brand and tire (or similar) that you want. Based on the RPM, you can see approximately how far off a speedo would be. (ie if it is 840, you would be around 3% off). Speedometers are not that accurate, i think the allowance is 8%.

There is a site that will actually give you the calculations, including how much your speedo will be off, either fast or slow. I tried posting the link once before, but it didn't work. I'll try again:

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Just plug in your stock tire size and then the size of the tire you are considering, and it will give you info like sidewall heights, tire diameter and radius, revolutions per mile, as well as speedo differences.

Or just go to www.tirerack.com , they've done all the calculating for you. Probably even got it right!

I have my konigs and IS300 rims with tire sizes of 215 45 17, and it throws my speedo off just a lil bit. I went pass one of those displays that cops leave around here to tell you how fast your going and it clocked me at 26, I looked at my speedo and it said 30. I might try those 215 50 17's. I thought 50's would slow it down more, but its worth a try.

You might wanna be careful when you upgrade to larger tires. Because the width of a 215/50 is wider than a 215/45, you might run into issues with strut clearance. The IS300 wheel has a high offset (meaning the wheel will sit more inward towards the chassis).
