2004 Toyota Camry Solara: New model introduced in spring 2003 with mechanical changes in line with the redesigned 2002 Camry sedan. We hear it is a proper notchback coupe, not a fastback like first-generation car.

I've been trying to figure that one out, NASTY.

Fastback, as far as I can tell, means the rear glass is nice and swoopy but the trunk is isolated from the passenger compartment. The Mustang was considered a fastback (still is, I guess).

Notchback, I think, really means hatchback. Wasn't the Integra a notchback?

Please somebody correct me if I'm wrong. [I'm trying to stay up all night in order to sleep tomorrow in the day because I'm working overnights this week.]

good old dictionary.com

fast·back n.

notch·back n.

Notchback Look

Postby atlantasolara » Fri Dec 27, 2002 6:25 pm

hi guys. this thread got my attention because i'm badly wanting to trade my solara because of its fast depreciation rate and looking at the 04 solara as a possible replacement.

"notchback," as someone else has competently described, has the roofline falling quite sharply, and not gradually as with the current model, from the rooftop to the leading edge of the trunk.

actually, "fastback" may still not accurately describe our current car, because strictly speaking the roofline extends way back to the trailing edge of the trunk for a car to be a fastback, as with the integra coupe and the late camaro and firebird.

nonetheless, i believe the nissan sylvia and the corvette hard top are close to what a notch top looks.

you might have seen the japan market model it's supposed to derive from (sorry, don't have the link). it doesn't look as good as the current model at this point but cars being statements of the times, it may still grow on us.

I have no idea which model you're talking about. I went to Toyota Japan's site, and the only coupe available is the Soarer (sc430 equivalent). Maybe you saw a photoshopped image or something, but according to Toyota Japan's site, there are no Japanese model Toyota coupes currently being sold other than the Soarer. Bummer, I was kinda hoping to find something.

On www.thecarconnection.com I read a post that was very disturbing. It was stating that the Solara my not be redesigned and they are waiting to announce the death of the car soon. I hope this twit is wrong.

i googled the site last night, typing 2003 accord as keyword (that's how i pulled up the alleged new solara's photo sometime march/april 2002) but, you guessed it, there're now a thousand more pages to choose from.

best i can recall is that the car-spy website had "hollywood" in its url; tried that too and found even more pages, even with solara as a co-keyword.

i'll get to it yet and will let you know. but did it look like the sc430 - actually it looked more like toyota's version of the nissan sylvia.

i'm hoping they continue making our car. from a purely business standpoint, the solara can keep customers in the toyota fold, i.e., solara owners upgrading to newer models, getting camrys/avalons as the family 4-door, or moving on to a lexus altogether.

the vibes are stronger that acura will terminate the cl coupe, because imo there's already the hotter-selling accord coupe in the honda family that's providing revenue.

but for toyota/lexus, unless lexus introduces something less pricey than the sc430, it'll be hard for them not to have a mid-level coupe like the solara.
