What is this Gunk?

What is this Gunk?

Postby GenerationOne » Tue Oct 18, 2005 12:42 pm

Hey guys, I'm in need of some helpful assistance. Really not sure what to think about this, whether it's a really serious problem? Or has anyone else seen this before? And does anyone know how to take care of it best?

It was easiest for me to set it up on my CarDomain site, this goes directly to the page that explains everything.

UPDATE: Sorry guys for wasting space on the forum, please don't bother responding, I found everything I need to know in another posting, but thanks for everything.

Looks like the sludge that some Toyota V6's had problems with. I can't remember if they did a recall on this or not. Anyone???

Would this be the same sludge covered in the "What The Sludge" posting? Yep she's a V6, I'm shocked, never heard of this before.

did you do all your oil changed on time and have the receipts? I believe the warranty on the block is extended to 8 years/80K miles (something like that) if you have proof of maintenance... this only occurs if proper maintenance procedure isn't followed

LOL, yea I'm pretty pissed about the whole thing, especially since it's not my fault, car had two previous owners. My guess is they knew very little about cars.

If the oil has collected there, I'd also be concerned about it collecting in other, more critical passages.

My two cents. Your mileage may vary.

when i bought the car it had about 92K miles and we changed to SuperSyn at about 92.5K. Since then about 3500 miles have been added and the sludge doesn't look like it's got too much worse. I plan on changing the oil this weekend. Might even remove valve cover to try and clean the muck off too.

crap, this sounds horrible! alright, now because I don't have records, like receipts, what's the next best thing? Would a typical tune-up include cleaning this sludge out from everywhere?

Not any tune-up that I know of; I'd say to keep a good oil change regimen, but like you said the car had previous owners (**Dashes out to look at his car's engine block since I got mine used**).

That looks just like mine, my car was a one owner and on carfax it shows every 3k miles it was at the dealer.

As you may already know, Consumer Reports mentioned Toyota as a brand prone to sludge build up. Speaking for myself, I think it'd be a very prudent thing to do to get the oil passages professionally cleaned after buying a used car with an unknown history.

Oil flushes are cheap compared to replacing engine bearings. Or Cams.
