I'm going to be buying a 2000 solara for 600 bucks in a few days. Everything is fine on the car except for the engine, it's toast. Do any of you guys know of any good (and cheap) rebuilders/ jdm importers? How about using engines from older years? It's a four banger engine code 5sfe.

Thanks a bunch -Ryan

When I blew the 5SFE in my Celica I picked up one from Brandywine for $480 with only 46K miles on it. I installed it myself, so my TOTAL installation with new gaskets, plugs, wires, belts, hoses, filters, fluids, the engine, etc... ran me right around $700. Check out http://www.brandywineparts.com and do a search for used parts. They may list it at a higher price, but I talked them down from $1200 + $1200 installation (they wouldn't originally sell it to me without install)... That's considerable... They should start out considerably less now anyways (I glanced at the site for a Celica 5SFE for '93 and it showed a '92 for $850)...

I'm in fresno CA. I'm buying the car from a friend who doesn't want to mess with repairs. I have about a thousand bucks i can invest in repairs, but im finding the info on the 4 cylinder engine scarce. I'm just trying to explore my options and get a rough estimate on cost.

since you are in california, you must get a 97-00 California version of 5SFE in order to pass smog.

in fact, you have to get a same year of engine or newer in order to be legal

wait a sec, if you are getting a new engine for it, couldnt you put in a V6 instead? better yet, a rebuilt V6 that can have muchos horses? I know that's what I would be doing... and if you happen to run across another deal like that, please let me know!!

Yah, i could put a v6 in but i don't want to tune it. I just want it for a nice daily driver. Plus like Turbosolara said, california emmisions are a pain enough without a swap.

The motor my boy is selling would be no use to you then since its out of a 92 Camry and I'm located on the east coast.

You should do a Scion conversion on it. Get the 2.4 liter motor with the possible supercharger for it later on since the V6 supercharger is rare to find now-a-days for the Solara.

Good Luck, either way, your still getting a hell of a deal on that 2000 Solara.

There's a great deal for you. If you pick that up and get it installed, you'll be driving that car at a steal.

I take it from the way you guys are talking the older camry engines will swap in? If so that would be great.

pre 97 5sfe had many difference with post 97 5sfe, mainly igintion and fuel system.

pre 97 - runs fuel return line, uses cap and rotor for ignition
post 97 - runs returnless fuel line, uses ignition pack
pre 96 - runs OBDI
post 96- runs OBDII system

NO it does not. if you want to put 2AZFE or 1mzfe motor, you would need to replace all of the harness, ecu, and transmission at same time. not worth it in my opinion.

^^ what he said, just stick with 1997-2001 camry and/or 1999-20001 solara i4 engines and you will be fine. For under a grad you could pretty much be set for another 5+ years.
