2002 differences

2002 differences

Postby mrmobius2000 » Thu Jul 10, 2003 10:36 am

Can anyone suggest a place where I can find a summar of the differences between the 99-01 Solaras and the 2002 Solara (other than cosmetic)? I am thinking there must be some differences since many parts suppliers I look at identify their suspension pieces as fitting 99-01 models and don't say anything about the 2002 model.

Thanks for the help,

THey added another wood piece around the shifter...

The 4 cylinder engine was upgraded. It's now a 2.4 L as opposed to the 99-01 2.2 L model.

The trunk release was moved from the "driver's seat side" to inside the glove compartment *DOONK*

The Keyless Entry also included a trunk release button *DOONK*

There is a Daylight Running Lights "off" switch right on the light switch (as opposed to disconnecting wires in the 99-01)

I think that's everything that is obvious besides the exterior cosmetics.
There may be other little details though...

I think the interior trim is grey burl wood instead of burl wood.

whats the deal with that? my 95 avalon is like that too! its the most pointless thing and i cant think of any reason why its better to have it in the glove compartment. its more inconvenient!!

oh and also, apparently the lights dont turn on automatically in the gen 1.5, which is another difference from the gen 1. front bumper, grill and fog lights diff as well. and i think the remaining differences were covered already.

oh yea, all gen 1.5 engines are vvti, which is apparently better for emissions and performance. for the v6, the vvti didnt change hp or torque ratings by much, but for hte I4 engine, it was a pretty good boost, from 135 to 147 hp

the i4 has 157 hp and they did not add VVT-i to the V6 in the Solara, it's only in the Avalon and Camry.

does the vvti even have any influence on emissions? as far as i knew it was just fuel economy and a little kick

the cars are tested at low RPMs for emissions... so the vvt-i wouldn't effect your tests... but it opens the intake valve more and holds it open a little longer, so you would burn more air and fuel.

Appearantly the VVT-i helps a lot when the 2AZ-FE goes up against the 1MZ-FE... HEHEHE (inside joke... hahahahahahaha!)

I assumed the vvti set up (imz-5speedauto w/ vvti) was only for camry (from their es engines)..and not on the solara (where we have 1mz 4speedauto w/o vvti).

a little off the subject, but where exactly is that trunk release in the glove box? I locked my keys in the trunk once and had a grand old time trying to reach between my 2 12's and dig around for them. 8)

Ill take a picture and upload it lol!! Some people don't know where the 02-3 trunk release is!!!

If you look in the owners manual, it should also have a picture of it. (That's how I learned about it... lol)

oooo...if it's in the glovebox, make sure you don't lock the glovebox. If you lock your keys in the trunk, a locksmith can't get into it w/out cutting a key which = big bucks/headaches without a keycode.

If you lock your keys in the trunk and have a trunk release you can just pop it to get them out.

(haha..sorry, I HATE when people lock their keys in the trunk and don't have a release..it's the biggest pain in the a$$)
