Wow, that was a totally lame response from the dealer. Try asking them for more information. If the check engine light is on, there will be a malfunction code. The code is associated with a description. This will tell you what the problem is. When you take a car to the dealer, they usually write the malfunction code on the receipt along with the failure description. It could be that they were correct and the code he saw was related to the oil cap being loose (usually, it's the gas cap). Then when it was tightened, it detected a different problem. You don't want to simply turn it off, your car is telling you something is wrong, you need to fix it. You can purchase an OBD-2 scanner and check the codes and turn it off yourself. Do a search on this web forum and you'll find mention of a couple of them that various members have bought. Most cost just over $100. I bought 1 called Car Codes. They can do more than just diagnostics. They can give you performance info and much more. Good luck. -JoeB
