Gen1 V6 Transmission Oil need to change differential?

Gen1 V6 Transmission Oil need to change differential?

Postby esculatus » Mon Apr 19, 2004 8:15 am

Hi Guys,

I am wondering how much transmission oil is needed for an auto transmission oil change? I noticed the Haynes manual says the differential is a separate compartment than the transaxle, so if I were to do it myself, I am not sure which filler/drainer plugs to unbolt. Does anyone has a picture of this? or should I just take it to flush it?

Thanks,

Eric

i can only assume the trannsmission pan.

its under the tranny on the driver's side of the car.

depending on mileage i would just take it to get it flushed. not serviced.
a flush with filter and gasket repl.

a service is when they unplug the pan, take out approx 3 qts of tranny fluid, repl the filter and gasket then simply refill the 3 qts. end of story.

a flush (complete transmission fluids are fresh) is when the car is hooked up to a machine, and about 8-12qts (not too sure how much) is washed out with the new fluid.

the tranny itself holds about 8-12qts of fluid (again im not familiar with how much is inside the tranny.)

as a matter of fact im going to flush mine today.

im sticking with reg.

haven't done enough research on the synthetic.

plus i don't have a machine that flushes this stuff.

im going to my friend who works at the chevy dealer to flush, so i don't really know if the machine can use synthetic tranny fluid.

You need around 10qts. Buy a box (12 units) of 1 qts and refund the other 2 when you finished flushing.

On V6, differential is intergrated in the tranny, so you just drain the tranny, drop the pan, take off the screener and wash it (it's reusable, it's not a filter), put it back, torque to spec. On I4, differential is a seperate unit and you need to drain + refill that part.

After dropping the pan, I disconnected the fluid return-line from the radiator and used the cranking method to flush the whole tranny with Redline D4 Synthetic Fluid (great stuff by the way). I also added in a B&M tranny cooler, good for driving the car hard.

Anyways, not much tools are needed, but you will need a 5mm or 6mm (i forgot which) hex drive to take off the tranny drain bolt.

hmmm... I thought it's the reverse. My Haynes manual says the V6 AT has a separate differential refill/drain compartment than the transmission( the one you unscrew with 10mm hex).

Can some one confirm this?
if I dont have to do it... that's great!
but if I do...
my question is I dont know where it is... does anybody have a picture of the differential drain/refill plugs?

Thanks

The Haynes manual is wrong, I have the same manual.

If you look at your owner's manual on the amount of fluid needed, you will understand.

puhahaha... no wonder I can't find it...
LOL
so I just need to drain and refil the transmission right? do I need to replace the gasket and pan? or only when I take it to a dealer to flush it?

Thanks! That's good news to me

It really depends on how thorough of a job you want.

I drained, took off pan, washed screen, put on new gasket for pan, put on new metal gasket for drain bolt, put like 4 qts of new fluid into the tranny, disconnected the return line, do the crank-flush and flushed out all the remaining fluid. At the end I have bright red tranny fluid in the whole tranny.

Of course you can just drain and top it up (which requires you to buy a metal drainbolt gasket); but it won't be that clean.

It's not difficult, but it's a lot of work, since you may even need another car to jump start your car for it to work. I was writing a tutorial, but then I got bored writing because there are too many steps.

hsakuragi: the other 5 quarts are in the tranny and torque converter.

okay... this is weird because I asked my toyota dealer service and they said for drain and refill, it's 3.7 but my Haynes Manual says it's 5qts... so I just put in 4 for now... I am truely confused... and also, I guess I couldn't read the dip stick because there are oil everywhere since I just poured it thru the dipstick hole... in any case, would 4qt be okay?
or I need more?
