I thought automatics were supposed to have better gas mileage. I know it's not that big of a difference but it's still sayin the manual has better mileage.

a manual has 5 gears while our auto only has 4 - also a manual tranny is more efficient in transfering power

The torque converter takes power to operate in stop and go traffic because of the fluid coupling. The torque converter transfers/multiplys the torque by using fluid to take the power from the engine and transmit it to the transmission. During idling and acceleration the input is spinning faster than the output, which is inefficient and generates heat. This loss is why the city mileage is much lower with an auto. Highway mileage is about the same because the torque converter is locked up (no slipping) at constant speed, so it acts the same as a manual transmission.

In regard to the gas milage manual always tends to have better as indicated above.

dude thats awful? are u doing all city driving? i remember once i went through a whole tank in my four banger just in the city, and i got somethin like only 300 miles. it sucked, cuz i usually get about 430 before the gas light comes on, so thats about 490 to the tank.

wouldn't it also apply to the amount of rpms you push up b4 each gear shift? I know my car with the auto. I can judge the shifting on the tranny with my car to make gears change faster if i wanted if the transmission cooperates hehe. But lately, i've been pushing 3 and mild 4's on the tacho in the city area. Plus the trd filter might have something to do with it as well but i feel more power going in @ certain rpm levels and feeling the push of the acceleration.

I'm planning a trip to Anahiem, CA for the july 4th weekend from Phx, AZ for an Expo. I'm waiting to see how my milage will be now since I changed the filter. I was able to get to like Six Flags area from Phx with just a full tank of gas. And my 2000 has a 17.5gal tank. The miles from phx to la is about 375ish so you be the judge. =)

Actually, they have 18.5 gal tanks. Just wouldn't recommend running it that low. :D
