Mp3's are a different format than cd music. The headunit won't play compressed files!

Physically, the head units are the same. No problems there. BUT, the wire harnesses are different, so a newer model is not plug and play. I put a 6 pack in my dash, but I had to get the wire harness and amp from the 01 Camry that was wrecked. You DO NOT have to cut any wires if you go this route. This way you have an in dash changer and a better looking head unit.
