yea i mean he would have checked all that. i checked the cv boots myself too, theyre fine. but if he said its comin from the tranny, then i guess it is...

Im stumped...since you said the noise halted upon pressing the brakes, thats where I would look first....check everything to see if the pads are loose, the sroud thing is loose.....also, you might want to put some of that brake pad stuff on the backs of the pads...there might be a bit of play between the pads and the caliper....just a guess though. Ive never heard a transmission prob that went away with the brakes :(

a free brand new transmission...why not. It could be that previous driver or you didnt drive the manual tranmission too well. also go buy a oem repair manual and study more

got the car back from the dealership. turns out a wheel was loose, and that was causing the noise. got charged 40 bucks diagnostic fee :evil:

you mean it was just a matter of tightening some lug nuts? how anti-climactic! o well, good news none the less.

yea i guess. although it still doesnt explain the clunking i got with the wheels off and the car jacked up... could that be something from the differential doing its job? but with the wheels down and car moving, no noise at all

I don't think he means loose lug nuts. I had a similar problem a couple of years ago, and it turned out to be a loose bolt on the lower control arm. I kept hearing a clicking sound from my right front wheel. I checked the strut mounts, the CV joints, even the engine mounts, and couldn't figure it out. I was pretty relieved when it just turned out to be a loose bolt.

..for everything else there is solaraguy!

(reminds me of this time when i played with my gauges and coun't figure what what was wrong - turned out to be dimmer control thingie set to the lowest low!!)
