it is hard for me to believe a toyota cam just went out just like that. maybe you need to get second opinion from other toyota specialist.

Did you end up finding out what the problem was? Mine makes the same kind of rattling noise - 99' V6, 73k miles; I was told by my mechanic the cam something (I'm running on 3 hours of sleep and completely forgot what he said) needs adjusting and was likely causing the noise, it would be $50 or so on top of the timing belt charges (that needs done soon too) and I should get it fixed within a week or two.

I wasn't worried about the noise because the car runs perfect, but it could be the water pump or belt making noise too, I have no idea :(. Damnit, I'm worried about the possible cost implications of this now. *sigh*

Mine is engine related I think, not belt related noise, but it will prove to be just as expensive with the belts and all getting done too. I know I had a different noise before this engine one showed up this week, I beleive it might be the same as yours, so maybe I've got 2 tihings neding fixed :(.

Did you have yours done at a dealership for that price? I'm thinking of going to one, my mechanic is much cheaper but only offers 30 day warranties.

I did claim the dealership that it was my engine internal making that sound. After looking at it throughly it was the pulleys bearing. It sounded like it come from within my engine..Scared me to DEATH.... The pulley bearing just knocks on the whole car makig it sound big and all. Take your car to a toyota dealership and see if they can figire it out..Then take it to your place and tell them what the dealership told you.. My labor was 400 bucks so yeah..

I was told its not as bad but the sound gets worst and worst and eventually that bearing will give out and the tension on your belt becomes loosen..Thats when its bad and your timing gets off and BOOM...

Hope your find out the problem on it.. I think my 700 bucks was worth it on my car. I love my solara.. Ecept when it rains and birds poop on it..

Ok, now I see what you've been talking about :P. Yes, they told me it _might_ be that causing a noise, I had two sounds actually, one before this that sounded like it was coming from the timing belt area (which could be this problem you had), then one started this weekend (a loud clicking), which may jsut be the same one getting worse, I never paid attention because I thought it was normal until 3 mechanics pointed it out, so I don't know...

Grr... anyway I'm going to have them fix the valve lash with shims today (damn $600 at best), if that doesn't get rid of all the noises, I'll suspect this. They said they would find the noise and fix it during the belt change later if need be.

Edit: Oh, thanks for all your help man, I apperciate it :).
