Anyone change thier own oil?

oil change

The biggest mistake most new mechanics make is to overtighten the new filter and the drain plug. Tighten the filter by hand only until it seats and then about 3/4 turn more. Do not put a filter wrench on it to tighten it.

umm...whats the gasket?

It's a plastic gasket used in conjunction with the drain plug. A small item toyota adds to every oil change.

I am sure Toyota doesn't sell us a 50 cents gasket for a profit.

There will always space for liquid to come out when you use metal vs metal. Gaskets will prevent leak... much like head gasket and those washers for brakeline.

Replace just to be safe :D

What's the best way to clean any excess oil that might spill onto the engine and its components? Should I take a hose to it. Specifically, im referring to the oil that might/will spil when i unscrew the oil filter. Again, thanks for all the input.

no NOOO! no hose. just use a good shoprag and get in there and get dirty! make sure your headers are cooled down so you can put your hand on it.

u can also use some brake kleen. it cleans up oil really well. some brands r flammable tho so make sure that header is cooled down.

Anything flammable is a no no. Use simple green or any non toxic cleaner.

it's not necessary, but I like to pour just a little bit of oil in before I replace the plug to flush it out. And if you feel like getting dirty, stick your hand in the oil and feel for and metal shavings.

You can avoid a leaky filter by letting the car sit for a couple hours before changing the oil...the oil in the filter will drain out into the engine itself...no leakage. :)

ohhhh....damn manual says it's better to change oil after 2 minutes of idling. "warm oil tends to drain better than cool oil"....

whadamess.

ROFL... 2 minutes of idling is enough to get the filter to the stage where it can't be touched anymore... Not to mention about the headers are gonna be hot.

heres what i did:
drive around for a bit so the oil heats up, let it drain and then remove the filter AFTER its been sitting a while (by the way, even after an hour the filter still leaks...)
