question about replacing a rear bearing

Postby beanslicer » Thu Jan 28, 2010 11:32 pm

so i just replaced it today, first time taking off a wheel, working with a torque wrench, yadda yadda... took off the wheel, started unscrewing the break calipers, was using a 3/8 wrench with a 1/4 adapter to a 14mm socket, adapter broke... switched over to the 1/4 wrench, that broke... put the wheel back on, went to the store, picked up an impact wrench, rated at 45 ft/lbs, picked up a compressor from a friend, got home, took off the wheel, realized that the impact wrench wont connect to the compressor without a nipple... put the wheel back on, went to the store again, picked up a nipple, got back to the house, connected everything, took off the wheel... apparently one of the screws on the break caliper was so rusted that 45 ft/lbs was not even close to enough... luckily at this point i realized that my long ass torque wrench connects to the new impact sockets i just picked up, so i used that to finally get that bolt off... success!
lex:1, solara:5 haha everything went pretty smoothly after this, got the stuff off (there was one bolt on the hub that was hard to get at, but otherwise no big deal) put everything back on and torqued... time for a test drive, get up to 40 mph, and there comes that familiar humming noise... FML i go back to the mechanic... they say the other bearing is also shot, and needs to be replaced... well, atleast i know how to do this now so the next one should only take an hour... instead of 5 lol... gonna go back to return the impact wrench tomorrow...

NoooB!!!

You probably would have been better off just getting a 3/8 ratchet. I almost never use air tools. At least you got the job done though.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

disregard where i wrote wrench... i meant ratchet... (i am an immigrant) but anyway, still same results, one broken ratchet, and one broken 3/8-1/4 adapter... and my friend recommended the impact ratchet, which didn't even work in the end anyway...
anyway, it was fun to do myself instead of paying the mechanic... next time: more beer!

Haha, that's cool. A 45lbs. impact gun is pretty much pointless anyway, as you learned. They make lots of impacts capable of about 500-900lbs. Those are useful. :D

Are you German?

1/2" drive wrench with sockets and 1/2" breaker bar. Most of what you'll need for all car work.

Yeah invest in a decent 1/2inch drive breaker bar.
I have one and love it. You'll almost never need 1/4inch drive
stuff, or a slotted screwdriver to work on a car.

So you're a Russian that grew up in Israel. That's pretty exotic.
I thought that Lex was a German name, but I guess not.
You also look a little like a friend of mine that is of German descent.

You *bought* a torque wrench? Does that mean you stole it? lol

By the way, you should never use the torque wrench for ANYTHING other than measuring torque. Supposedly it ruins the calibration.

i didnt steal, that would be immoral, instead i simply used sears' return policy on craftsman products in my favor, it was a 15-150 ft lb torque wrench, at 150 ft-lb's it was more then enough to loosen the screw without the torque wrench getting to its full capacity.

I see. lol

None the less, if were 'your' torque wrench, I would recommend against it. The shock to the tool when the bolt breaks free is a different force than the slow, steady increase in torque when tightening.

Not trying to bust your balls either way. :drinking:
Props for tackling an unfamiliar repair yourself, btw.

yeah dude, thanks for the advice, i dont want to break the torque wrench either way, cause someone is going to end up owning it... honestly, if i had the money, i would keep it, but i cant afford it, so i do with what ive got :)
thanks, im going to try replacing the alternator tomorrow, as that just stopped working... it doesnt seem all that difficult.
Ben, you might want to consider getting yours checked just in case :p

Now I'm lost. Sleeper, did you replace the bearings or the alternator last week.
And Lex, do you think I should check the bearings or the alternator?

Sorry, I just got lost there.

I have been thinking about replacing the alternator with the 130A from the Sienna or Highlander. But for now, I think my alternator is fine.
As for the bearings, I did get them figured out, and decided they weren't what was causing my problem. So I fixed the actual cause and saved a lot of cash. I guess I got lucky on that one. :sweet:
