What Kind of Oil to use?

Postby 20SoLaRa02 » Wed Nov 20, 2002 12:38 am

in that case maybe a little harder than normal. my average shifting for each gear is around 2200 rpm and i do quite a bit of highway miles as i drive to and from school on weekends which is about an hour. i do a little bit of driving during the week on the street. all in all i've been gettin the suggested highway mileage of 27 mpg.

thanx for the info on what i thought was so called "normal driving"

so how often should i change my oil?

I never realized how complicated that question actually is. But I drive 3,000 miles in 3 months and that means I make 4 oil changes a year. If you do it yourself that's like $40/yr. and $80/yr if you have someone do it for you (assuming you use dino). Not expensive at all but that's all relative I guess.

I change it at 3k and it certainly won't hurt my car to do so. The longer you wait to make an oil change, the more potential (although unlikely) there will be a problem.

Look at it this way, all the cars in our household are high mileage cars (we travel all over CA and to Texas quite often). The most mileage we have gotten out out of our cars was a 90 Pymouth Voyager SE V6 (Mitsubishi 3.0L) with 275,000 miles with the original engine and this was only in 5 years time since we first bought it. All of our vehicles in our household see way over 100k miles with no problems thanks to 3-4k mile oil changes. It's up to you how often you want to change your oil. 3k is the safest and easiest way to keep your engine running for a long time. I'm close to 71k on my Solara and it's still running strong with no leaks or problems.

I completely agree. For the $20 or $30 it costs to do an oil change. DEFINATELY get it done every 3000 miles. Its just not worth it. In the long run it will help out your car so much. Look at all the crazy things that people on this solara forum do to keep their cars running in pristine condition, the least you can do is change your oil at a regular 3k interval

Oil is very dirty at 3k even if you use synthetic. It actually starts to get dirty around 2k. I've heard of engines lasting 300-500k on regular oil. I don't think any non-racecar needs synthetic.

Synthetic of course will still get dirty, but thats expected. Synthetic oil holds up much better under extreme conditions, and i have found that my cold weather starts are much quicker. Its also piece of mind in quart form knowing that i am putting top of the line oil in my car

Yeah, two things I've read/hear alot.

Oil is cheaper than metal.
An oil change is the cheapest insurance.

lol...don't come visit me..a house full of women and we all drive like nuts.

i hate driving w/ my mom now. maybe she was always like this and i'm just not used to it cause i've had my own car now for a while...(or maybe she's getting old..heheh...) but anyways!! i can't stand it! i like to idle in traffic and just brake when necessary. i see no reason using gas to get to a red light (blame my dad..he's horrible..."coast, melissa!! coast!! where's the brake action!!). my mother tho will literally gun the car and then slame on the brakes in stop and go traffic...like wipe lash stops..omg!! we're in boston and the guy in front of us moves like 3yards so instead of rolling she using the gas...ahhhh! my head..i yelled at her after a while...

omg!! i let her borrow my car a couple of weeks ago!! ahhh!! omg! i hadn't thought about this first!! lol..damn, she learned my tricks, she asked me if she could borrow it when i was half asleep in bed. she turned the tables..the famous.."mom can i go to blah blah blah..or mom, can i have some money?" when she's half asleep on the couch. see used it on me!

i think i should get my brakes checked now.

that's funny cause my mom and sister drive fast and it's my dad that's the psycho "gas economy", "i'm the best driver in the world", "women can't drive", "slow down, a*shole" kinda driver.

i changed my oil today, and it was not fun at all. maybe becuse the oil filter would not come off at all! took us like 20 min to get that off. i used moblie 1 5w-30.. instead of 10w-30. the box said 5w-30 was recommended for newer cars.. and 10w-30 is recommend for cars with higher mileage? i just hit 3100 on my car.. i guess later on ill switch to 10w-30..
