Ehhh... 5w30 isn't necessary for your car..especially in CA climate. use 10w30 the next time.

It would be 5 quarts of oil but 15w-50 is a little too heavy, especially for winter. Thats meant for trucks more or less. In the winter if your area gets cold try 5w-30 and in the summer use 10w-30

If its just going to goto waste then maybe you can use it. But if you just want to use it because he has it, i wouldn't. I don't know if anyone has tried heavier oil, and it also depends on your driving style

Sluggish startups...and possible oil sludging i.e. clogged oil pump in the morning and etc. Toyota tells you to use specific oils for a reason. 10w30 and 5w30 only.

10w30 is perfect year round. For synthetic, 5w30 works just fine year round.

Sludge engine

Postby Iflyhd » Mon Jan 13, 2003 2:25 am

The 1MZ-FE V6 has a reputation for sludging, but it is as much from lack of maintenance as it is for the position of the engine. The engine is mounted at an angle with the 3 cylinders closest to the firewall tiltiled on the downside, creating a problem with the oil settling. This is a known problem within toyota and there is a TSB out addressing this. The recommendation is checking the engine for sludging at around 90K miles and if it is occuring, they have been known to replace the engines under warrenty. But this will only occure if your maintenace records show oil changes at the recommended intervals.

Sluding is more due to lack of maintence than an error on toyotas part, but yet there is a problem with it settling. Sludge has been discuessed in detail and it was concluded that if you can prove maintence they will replace the engine and pay for all labor (around 19 hours)
